So, you think that you want to adopt a retired racing greyhound? Please understand that greyhound ownership is a lifestyle and a privilege. Your decision to do so should not be taken lightly. There are several steps within the process that will enable the potential adopter to make an informed decision regarding greyhound adoption.
All potential adopters are required to read Lee Livingood's "About Retired Racing Greyhounds For Dummies". You can find this book at any bookstore or some pet stores. Lee gives you an in depth look into what greyhound adopters may encounter once their retired racer is home. Potential adopters with children in the household will also be required to read Brian Kilcommons' "Childproofing Your Dog". These books must be read prior to your greyhound being placed in your home.

You Can Choose The Greyhound For You
Come out to our kennel located in Pennsauken,
New Jersey. Bring your entire family, any other dogs that
are in your home, or anyone who will be a constant extended
family to your greyhound. Fill out an application and talk to our
volunteers. We will match your application to as many
available greyhounds that fit your lifestyle. Then it is
up to you. We will introduce you to them one at a time in
our playroom. Spend as much time as you need. You
get to pick the greyhound that touches your heart. Once
you decide which greyhound you would like to adopt into your
family, you can leave a $75.00 deposit for us to hold them while
we complete your application process. One of our adoption
coordinators will contact your references. When your
application is approved, we will contact you to make
arrangements for your greyhound to come home. When
your greyhound comes home, the balance of the $250.00 adoption donation will be due.
Please Note: As of May 1, 2007 our adoption donation will
be $275.00. This increase is to help offset the cost of
our adoption kennel. If for some reason your application is denied, then you will receive your deposit back in full.
Senior greyhounds, eight years and older, and Brood Mommas in
our program are available for adoption for a donation of the
adopters choice.
Your new furkid is fully vetted. They have been spayed or neutered, are current on all vaccinations, tested for heartworm, de-wormed if necessary,
microchipped, are on heartworm preventative, and Front Line Plus has been applied. We also ensure that they are bathed, ears are cleaned, and their nails are clipped prior to going home. You will receive a new martingale collar and leash (a special collar that a greyhound must use) from our friends at Premier Pet Products, a GAA identification tag, a new muzzle, and a
5lb bag Breeders Choice. Thanks Breeders Choice!!
Your greyhound also comes with 30 days of free
health insurance from Shelter Care. Their health insurance
covers: kennel cough, intestinal parasites, urinary tract
infection, ear infection, upper respiratory infection,
mange/mite infection, canine parvovirus, foreign body ingestion
removal, motor vehicle accidents, bone fractures, and defined
poison ingestion. The adopter is responsible for a $50.00
deductible and the insurance pays up to $500.00 per incident.
The adopter may choose to continue this coverage for their
greyhound for $20.00 per month. Thank you Shelter Care for
caring for our greyhounds.
All adopters will receive the name and phone number of a Greypal at the time of adoption. This is an experienced greyhound adopter that you may call with any questions or concerns once your greyhound is home. Your Greypal will also be contacting you to ensure that your greyhound's transition is going smoothly and that you do not have any questions regarding their care. We are committed to making your adoption experience a "greyt" one.
